TBS' Wyatt Cenac Alien Comedy 'People of Earth' Ordered to Series
TBS is adding another comedy from a Daily Show alum to its roster.
The Turner-owned cable network has picked up Wyatt Cenac alien comedy People of Earth to series, the company announced Thursday at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour.
The half-hour scripted comedy went through the development cycle under the working title of The Group and is produced by Conan O'Brien's Conaco in association with Warner Horizon Television. O'Brien, Jeff Ross (Conan), David Kissinger (Eagleheart), Larry Sullivan, Dan Halsted (Sunshine State, Any Given Sunday) and director Greg Daniels (The Office, Parks and Recreation) serve as executive producers on the pilot, which was written and created by co-executive producer David Jenkins.
People of Earth centers on skeptical journalist Ozzie Graham (Cenac), who investigates a support group to write about the members' supposed alien encounters. The more he digs into their oddball claims, the more he realizes a semblance of truth to their stories and possibly even signs that point to his own alien abduction. The one-time outsider now finds himself a part of this eclectic group of misfits, all the while struggling with the idea of knowing that life could exist beyond our world.
The cast also includes Ana Gasteyer (Suburgatory) and Oscar Nuñez (The Office), marking a reunion for the latter with Daniels. TBS has ordered 10 episodes of People of Earth. A premiere date has not yet been determined.
"Having Greg Daniels executive produce and direct a project for us at such an early stage in the network's evolution is huge. His keen ability to assemble a brilliant ensemble cast has obviously worked well in the past," said Brett Weitz, executive vp original programming at TBS. "Since the launch of Conan, which has been a brand beacon for TBS for more than five years, we've been searching for just the right sophisticated and funny scripted comedy series to develop with our partners at Conaco. I believe we found that in this wonderfully original script by David Jenkins."
For TBS, the show marks its third series with a Daily Show alum at the helm. People of Earth joins recently ordered scripted comedy series The Detour, starring Daily Show alum Jason Jones and exec produced by Jones and fellow grad Samantha Bee, the latter of which is set to host upcoming late-night talk show Full Frontal.
The comedy comes as TBS is undergoing a major reinvention. Under new network topper Kevin Reilly, the cabler has canceled all of its returning scripted originals (save for animated import American Dad) as it heads into 2016 with an entirely new roster of comedies, which also will include Wrecked, Search Party and Angie Tribeca, the latter of which will kick off this month with an unprecedented 25-hour season-one marathon before returning for its second season shortly thereafter.
