Televisa is looking to expand its slate of English-language originals.

The Mexican media giant has ordered 10 scripts of sci-fi thriller The Seventh Day from writer Scott Shepherd (Haven), The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Based on Shepherd's post-apocalyptic book of the same name, the project centers on Joad, who is halfway around the world and one of the few left unharmed when most of humanity is obliterated. He is on a dangerous trek home to Nemo in the hope his wife waits for him. The journey with companions he reluctantly gains along the way takes them through a landscape equally beautiful and haunting, mysterious and magical. Subsequent seasons will be based on future books written by Shepherd, with each ending in a cliffhanger.

Shepherd and his producing partner Cindy McCreery will pen the scripts and serve as showrunners. Lloyd Segan of Piller/Segan Productions (Greek, Haven) and Televisa USA's head of production and distribution Chris Philip also are on board as executive producers.

This marks the second project for Shepherd and McCreery at Televisa, where they also wrote the series adaptation of Parker, based on the Donald Westlake/Richard Stark novels.

“Through masterful storytelling, Scott and Cindy are once again weaving gripping stories into compelling television,” Philip said in a statement. “Their masterful tales fit perfectly with the wide array of sets and terrain that Televisa has to offer in Mexico, where we plan to shoot all of the series we greenlight with our pioneering production and distribution venture.”

Added Shepherd: “The story is centered around a new world with a line drawn firmly in the sand between good and evil, in which the characters are given a second chance to choose which side to throw down on by making emotional, grounded and relatable decisions.”

In addition to The Seventh Day, Televisa also is readying the English-language spy thriller Duality, starring Dougray Scott and shot in Mexico.

In addition to Haven, Shepherd's credits include The Dead Zone, Tru Calling and Quantum Leap.
