The journey of The Expanse is coming to an end.

Amazon has renewed the sci-fi series for a sixth and final season. The pickup comes about three weeks before the show's fifth season debut Dec. 16.

Season six will be The Expanse's third as an Amazon original. The first three seasons aired on Syfy, and Amazon revived it after the cable network canceled it in 2018. (Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is an avowed fan of the books on which the series is based.)

"From the moment we committed to bringing this show to life up until this final season, we have worked tirelessly to honor the vision of the writers. We have prided ourselves on having one of the most diverse casts on television and giving a platform to stories that matter," said Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, executive producers of The Expanse and co-CEOs and co-founders of producer Alcon Television Group. "A special thanks to Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, the writers of both the books and series, and to Naren Shankar, the series showrunner and executive producer. It continues to be an honor and privilege to work with this team. We also would like to thank Amazon for their continuing support to help us tell this story in its fullest and to bring The Expanse to a global audience."

Said Shankar, "The dedication and artistry of everyone who helps bring The Expanse to the screen is incredible. Our fans are awesome, and we cannot wait to get rolling on season six."

Castmember Cas Anvar will not return for the final season following an investigation into multiple allegations of sexual misconduct against him. The rest of the regular cast is set to reprise their roles in the final episodes.

The series is set in a future where humankind has colonized the solar system, although there's conflict between residents of Earth, Mars and the Asteroid Belt. When the crew of the spacechip Rocinante uncovers an ancient alien technology, a vast conspiracy begins to emerge, one that will bring the solar system to the brink of war.

Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby developed the series and executive produce with Shankar, Kosove, Johnson, Laura Lancaster, Sharon Hall, Sean Daniel and Jason Brown of Hivemind, Abraham, Franck and Dan Nowak.
