Tiffany Haddish to Voice Lead Character in Netflix Straight-to-Series Animated Comedy
Netflix is adding to its animation slate.
The streaming giant has handed out a straight-to-series order for Tuca and Bertie, a 10-episode animated comedy with Tiffany Haddish set to voice one of the leads.
From the team behind BoJack Horseman, the project revolves around the friendship between two 30-year-old bird women who live in the same apartment building: Tuca (Haddish), a cocky-care-free toucan, and Bertie, an anxious, day-dreaming songbird. (Bertie has not yet been cast.)
Lisa Hanawalt (BoJack) created the series and executive produces alongside Raphael Bob-Waksberg (BoJack), Noel Bright (BoJack, Friends), Steven A. Cohen (BoJack, Jack & Bobby) and Haddish. The series hails from Michael Eisner's Tornante Co. Animation will be done by Shadowmachine.
Tuca and Bertie joins an animated roster at Netflix that includes BoJack Horseman, F Is for Family, Castlevania and Big Mouth. Sources say animation is the next area that the streamer will focus on expanding.
For Haddish, the gig continues her breakout success after Girls Trip. She will next be seen opposite Tracy Morgan in TBS' The Last O.J., and opposite Kevin Hart in Universal's Night School. Haddish also signed a first-look deal with HBO and released a stand-up special on Showtime last year. What's more, she released her first book in December, which made the New York Times' best-seller list.
Haddish is repped by APA, Principato-Young and Del Shaw. Hanawalt is with UTA and Defiore & Co.
