Former House of Cards co-showrunner Frank Pugliese will take the reins of The Angel of Darkness, TNT's sequel to The Alienist.

The core cast of The Alienist — Daniel Bruhl, Luke Evans and Dakota Fanning — is set to return for the follow-up, which like its predecessor is based on a novel by Caleb Carr. The new story finds Fanning's Sara Howard, now running her own detective agency, coming to Dr. Laszlo Kreizler (Bruhl) and John Moore (Evans) for help in tracking down a killer.

The Alienist was a success for TNT, placing among the top 10 cable dramas of 2018 to date and earning six Emmy nominations, including for best limited series. The cabler ordered the sequel in August.

"Following the tremendous success of The Alienist, we are excited to welcome an immensely talented and accomplished showrunner who could not only do justice to Caleb Carr's popular sequel, but also add a unique point of view," said Sarah Aubrey, executive vp original programming at TNT. "With Frank, we have found a three-time Emmy Award nominee whose unique skills will surely catapult The Angel of Darkness to the same heights of success as its predecessor."

Pugliese earned three Emmy nods as part of the producing team for House of Cards when it was nominated for outstanding drama series from 2015 to 2017; he's also an executive producer of the show's final season, which bows Nov. 2. Pugliese won a Writers Guild Award for a 1993 episode of Homicide: Life on the Street.

"I am thrilled for the opportunity to work with the talented cast, crew and team that brought The Alienist to life," said Pugliese. "Myself and the writers coming on board for The Angel of Darkness are looking forward to continuing this story born from the wondrous imagination of Caleb Carr."

The Angel of Darkness comes from Paramount Television and Turner's Studio T. Eric Roth, Steve Golin and Rosalie Swedlin of Anonymous Content and Cary Joji Fukunaga are executive producers.

Pugliese is repped by WME and Manage-ment.
