'Smallville' Star Tom Welling Joins 'Lucifer' for Season 3

Tom Welling is returning to the DC Universe.

The actor, who starred on Smallville as Clark Kent/Superman for 10 years, has joined Lucifer for season three, producers announced Saturday at Comic-Con.

Welling will play Marcus Pierce, an accomplished police lieutenant who is everything Lucifer (Tom Ellis) is not — strategic, reserved and well-respected. However, they also both have a lot in common, like being charming, handsome and incredibly charismatic. So when Pierce begins to develop a connection with Decker (Lauren German), Lucifer's devilish traits are inflamed.

The role not only brings Welling back to the small screen for the first time in six years, but also brings him back to Warner Bros. TV, which produced Smallville and also produces Lucifer.

As with Smallville, Lucifer's main character is based on a DC comics character. Created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth, and Mike Dringenberg in The Sandman series, Lucifer eventually was spun off into its own comic book series by Mike Carey.

In addition to starring in, executive producing and even directing Smallville, Welling exec produced The CW cheerleader drama Hellcats. His other credits include The Choice, Draft Day and the Cheaper by the Dozen films. He is repped by WME and Ziffren Brittenham.

This is the latest genre-friendly casting get for Lucifer, which last season added Battlestar Galactica favorite Tricia Helfer in a season-long role as Lucifer's mom.

Lucifer's third season premieres Monday, Oct. 2, on Fox.
