No pilot season is without its trends, but 2016's biggest is overwhelming. Programmers at each of the Big Four networks are clamoring for a hit family comedy. One of television's most dependable genres, there's hardly a dearth of them on the air right now, but ABC's Modern Family is the only one that remains a de facto hit.
