Let's be frank. Finale week is not the most ideal time to launch a Big Four comedy, let alone a single-cam that skews a bit more niche than the typical broadcast fare. But that's where ABC planted Downward Dog, and the series premiere didn't do half-bad.

With a boosted Modern Family as its lead-in, Downward Dog opened to an average 1.1 rating among adults 18-49 and 4.7 million viewers. Neither number has the making of a juggernaut, but its relative retention of Modern Family (1.7 rating; 6.1 million viewers) bodes well.

Fox won the night with a steady episode of Empire, another thing that Downward Dog had to face in its 9:30 p.m. time slot. The Fox drama averaged a 2.1 rating among adults 18-49 and 6.1 million viewers.
