Fox was up and down on Wednesday night.

The 8 o'clock addition of American Idol, the series' penultimate episode, lifted the time slot significantly with an average 2.2 rating among adults 18-49 and 10.6 million viewers. Empire, meanwhile, lost a little of last week's return score for a 4.2 rating in the key demo. Fox easily ranked No. 1 for the night in both adults 18-49 and total viewers.

On ABC, The Middle (1.7 adults) was steady, while The Goldbergs (1.8 adults), Modern Family (2.2 adults) and Black-ish (1.6 adults) all saw dips. Nashville managed to rise to a 1.0 rating among adults 18-49.

A steady Survivor (1.9 adults) was followed on CBS by back-to-back episodes of Criminal Minds' Beyond Borders spinoff. Each episode earned a 1.2 rating among adults 18-49 — more of a disappointment for the 9 p.m. episode than at 10 p.m.

Heartbeat was the lone original on NBC, averaging just a 0.7 rating with adults 18-49. On The CW, Arrow (0.9 adults) and Supernatural (0.7 adults) were steady.
