HBO has said goodbye to Nucky for good.

Boardwalk Empire closed out its five-season run on Sunday with a series finale on par with its season premiere, delivering 2.3 million viewers at 9 p.m. — a 7 percent jump from last year's closer.

With encores factored in, the final episode topped 3 million viewers, the largest total Sunday audience for the show in its final eight-episode season.

In its earlier seasons, Boardwalk Empire was an Emmy contender along with star Steve Buscemi, debuting in fall 2010 to a strong 4.8 million viewers. It has since become a steady performer for HBO, often hovering in the 2 million viewer range.

Season to date, the final season of Boardwalk Empire averaged a gross audience of 6.6 million viewers per episode.
