Coming off last week's year-over-year drops, Wednesday's returning crop took more hits last night.

The two strongest performers, Empire and Modern Family, shared a victory on the night for the first time — each with a 1.9 rating among adults 18-49. Modern Family topped its demo competition among total viewers, besting Empire by half a million viewers. Modern Family has been in this demo range before, but the 1.9 ties a same-day low for Empire.

Wednesday's most watched status again went to CBS freshman SEAL Team. Its 8.4 million viewers more than compensated for its dip to a 1.2 rating among adults 18-49.

Star also fell, with a 1.4 rating among adults 18-49 on Fox, getting closer to its freshman showing. And, on ABC, the rest of the lineup — The Goldbergs (1.6 adults), Speechless (1.3 adults), American Housewife (1.4 adults), Designated Survivor (0.9 adults) — dipped down as well. CBS also had new outings of Survivor (1.6 adults) and Criminal Minds (1.1 adults).

NBC had the most steady telecast of the week in Law & Order: SVU. It averaged a 1.3 rating among adults 18-49 between new episodes of The Blacklist (1.0 adults) and Chicago P.D. (1.2 adults).
