NBC's sampling strategy with its midseason comedies is being greeted with mixed results. A week after the impressive preview of Superstore, fellow winter 2016 half-hour Telenovela opened to considerably smaller ratings.

With a steady episode of The Voice (2.8 rating among adults 18-49) as its lead-in, the Eva Longoria vehicle averaged a 1.4 rating in the key demo and 5.4 million viewers at 10:00. A second episode dropped considerably, pulling just a 0.8 rating and 3.3 million viewers. (Superstore, in turn, averaged a 2.0 and 1.6 rating in the same half-hours last Monday.)

Both series will make their formal debuts on Jan. 4.

Elsewhere on the broadcast networks, a steady Supergirl fetched a 1.5 rating among adults 18-49 on CBS. A flat Scorpion (1.7 adults) followed, as did a lifted NCIS: Los Angeles — up two-tenths of a point to a 1.4 rating in the key demo.

ABC saw the return of The Great Christmas Light Fight pull a 1.4 rating among adults 18-49 and 6 million viewers. It was followed by a steady second outing of The Great Holiday Baking Show (1.1 adults)

With no originals on The CW or Fox, the latter aired special TV's Funniest Animated Stars. It earned a 0.7 rating among adults 18-49.
