A shrinking holiday weekend TV audience did not hinder American Ninja Warrior. The NBC series returned up two-tenths of a point from its year-ago season opener, topping the night with an average 1.8 rating among adults 18-49.

The two-hour premiere was joined by the network's latest collaboration with Bear Grylls. The Island debuted with a 1.2 rating in the key demo, off two-tenths of a point from last summer's Running Wild.

Competition was pretty slim, with only ABC airing originals. A special 500 Questions brought a steady 1.1 rating with adults 18-49. The softer lead-in meant a half-point for the Bachelorette. The second week of the dating competition kicked off with a 1.6 rating.
