TV Ratings: Steady NBA Finals Score for ABC

Though the meeting between the Cavaliers and the Warriors resulted in something of a lopsided score, the game shed only 5 percent compared with last year.

ABC got its annual shot of sports ratings on Thursday night with its first game of the NBA Finals.

The game, while something of a blowout, brought an average 12.4 rating among metered market households. Those overnight numbers have the game ranking as the third-highest-rated for a Game 1, falling behind the previous two meet-ups between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors. Year over year, the game suffered only a modest 5 percent drop.

Regardless, it will certainly be enough to win the night by all measures once adjusted numbers come in. The start of the 2016 Finals, which had a 13.1 overnight rating, ultimately averaged 19.2 million viewers and a 7.3 rating among adults 18-49.

Competition was slim, but Fox did put up originals against the game. It had no effect on Beat Shazam, which averaged a steady 1.1 rating among adults 18-49 before the game started on the East Coast. At 9 o'clock, however, Love Connection dipped to a 0.8 rating in the key demo as viewers turned the dial to ABC.
