TV Ratings: 'Clarice' Has Decent Start for CBS

CBS' drama Clarice opened to decent ratings Thursday, giving the network a big upgrade over the filler programming it has been airing in the 10 p.m. time period so far this season. The net's comedies also scored season highs. On cable, MSNBC and CNN continued to lead coverage of the second impeachment trial of former President Trump.

Clarice — a sequel series to The Silence of the Lambs, starring Rebecca Breeds as Clarice Starling — drew 4 million viewers and 0.54 rating among adults 18-49, leading the 10 o'clock hour in both measures. That's a marked improvement from the same-day numbers for Star Trek: Discovery, which CBS had been airing in the time period earlier this season. The CBS All Access series averaged only about 1.7 million viewers and a 0.2 in the 18-49 demographic.

Young Sheldon (7.59 million) and Mom (5.45 million) hit season highs in total viewers, while B Positive (5.17 million) and The Unicorn (4.05 million) had their second largest audiences of the season. All four shows reached season highs in adults 18-49, and Young Sheldon led primetime with a 0.87 rating.

Elsewhere on the broadcast networks, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune (0.76 in 18-49, 5.57 million viewers) finished second in both the key ad demo and total viewers for ABC. NBC's Mr. Mayor (0.46, 2.75 million) and Superstore (0.39, 1.93 million) were both down a little. The CW's Walker (0.21, 1.73 million) continued its solid run, and Fox's lineup of Hell's Kitchen, Call Me Kat and Last Man Standing was fairly steady.

On cable, MSNBC led afternoon coverage of the impeachment trial with 3.13 million viewers, edging CNN's 2.97 million. The latter had the edge in the core news demo of adults 25-54 with about 665,000 viewers to 532,000 for MSNBC. Fox News was well off the pace, averaging 854,000 viewers and about 150,000 in the 25-54 demo. ABC and CBS combined for about 4 million viewers in the afternoon; figures for NBC weren't available.

Fox News fared considerably better in primetime with 2.94 million viewers, second to MSNBC's 3.06 million. CNN averaged 2.16 million from 8-11 p.m. but again topped the 25-54 demo. An NBA game on TNT (76ers-Trail Blazers) led the 18-49 rankings on cable with a 0.42.
