TV Ratings: 'Celebrity Wheel of Fortune' Outpolls 'Mr. Mayor'
NBC's Mr. Mayor put up decent ratings for its premiere Thursday — but was also solidly beaten by the debut of Celebrity Wheel of Fortune on ABC, which led primetime with a lineup of game shows. CNN led cable with continuing coverage of the riots at the U.S. Capitol.
Celebrity Wheel of Fortune topped the broadcast networks in primetime with a 1.16 rating among adults 18-49 and 8.15 million viewers in the final same-day ratings. The Chase (0.5, 6.48 million) also had a solid debut at 9 p.m., and The Hustler (0.71, 3.99 million) closed out ABC's night with better ratings in its regular home than for its Monday premiere (0.5, 2.08 million).
Mr. Mayor had mixed returns for NBC. The comedy, starring Ted Danson and created by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, scored modest ratings in the 18-49 demographic, with a 0.6 and 0.55 for its two-episode premiere. The 8 p.m. debut, however, had the most total viewers (5.04 million) for an NBC comedy in more than three years, since a December 2017 episode of Will & Grace. The second episode drew 4.41 million viewers.
Law & Order: SVU followed Mr. Mayor with a 0.65 in the demo and 3.86 million viewers, above its same-day averages. Dateline scored a 0.27 and 1.77 million viewers at 10 p.m.
Fox got a 0.76 in adults 18-49 and 2.78 million viewers from the season premiere of Hell's Kitchen. The time period debut of Call Me Kat (0.68, 3.3 million) predictably came down from its NFL-assisted premiere on Sunday, while and Last Man Standing (0.55, 3.31 million) improved in total viewers over Sunday.
CNN's Anderson Cooper 360 led cable in total viewers (5.77 million), adults 18-49 (1.04 rating) and the core news demo of adults 25-54 (1.51). CNN, in fact, had 14 of the top 15 cable programs Thursday among adults 25-54; MSNBC's Rachel Maddow Show (0.97 in the 25-54 demo and 5.4 million total viewers) was the other.
Among non-news programming, notable cable shows were the premiere of TBS' Go-Big Show (1.04 million viewers, 0.3 in 18-49) and TNT's telecast of the Philadelphia 76ers and Brooklyn Nets in the NBA (1.14 million, 0.44).
