'TV's Top 5': Dan Fogelman on How 'This Is Us' Will Navigate the Pandemic
Welcome to another episode of TV's Top 5, The Hollywood Reporter's TV podcast.
Every week, hosts Lesley Goldberg (West Coast TV editor) and Daniel Fienberg (chief TV critic) break down the latest TV news with context from the business and critical sides, welcome showrunners, executive and other guests and provide a critical guide of what to watch (or skip, as the case may be).
This week's five topics are:
1. So long, Quibi.
Qui-bye may be more likely as Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman's $2 billion shortform streaming service has shut down after a six-month run. The "quick bites" platform will look to find new homes for its content after failing to find a buyer for the service. This segment explores what led to Quibi's demise and looks at the potential legacy of the shortform experiment.
2. More exec changes.
CBS All Access is the latest to make a major executive change as the TV industry continues to consolidate and better position its streaming divisions. This segment examines the latest restructuring and what the changing of the guards means at the soon-to-be rebranded Paramount+ and Warner Bros. TV.
3. The state of Shondaland.
The Hollywood Reporter's annual Top Showrunners issue is out this week and features a list of the 50 most powerful in the industry — more than half of whom we've been lucky enough to have as guests on our show. The cover features the first interview with Shonda Rhimes since she decamped her longtime home at ABC Studios and created a sea change in the industry with a massive nine-figure overall deal with Netflix. Joining us this week to discuss her cover story on Rhimes is Executive TV editor Lacey Rose.
4. Showrunner Spotlight.
This week's guest is This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman, who joins the show for an interview about how the NBC family drama wrote the pandemic into the series, the debate among the show's writers to incorporate it, how having his first child has changed the types of stories he wants to tell and the future of the series (and state of spinoffs).
5. Critic's Corner.
As usual, every episode ends with Dan's look at what to watch (or skip). This week, he weighs in on Netflix's The Queen's Gambit, HBO's The Undoing and How to With John Wilson as well as National Geographic's City So Real.
Hear it all now on TV's Top 5. Be sure to subscribe to the podcast to never miss an episode. (Reviews welcome!) You can also email us with any topics or questions you'd like to be addressed in future episodes at TVsTop5@THR.com.
