'TV's Top 5': How 'Generation' Takes an Unfiltered Look at Teens Today
Welcome to Episode 111 of TV's Top 5, The Hollywood Reporter's TV podcast.
Every week, hosts Lesley Goldberg (West Coast TV editor) and Daniel Fienberg (chief TV critic) break down the latest TV news with context from the business and critical sides, welcome showrunners, executive and other guests, and provide a critical guide of what to watch (or skip, as the case may be).
This week's five topics are:
1. Harry and Meghan: The interview.
This segment explores Dan's thoughts on the Oprah Winfrey-hosted interview with the former royal couple.
2. Harry and Meghan: The interview's impact.
This topic looks at the ratings and bigger impact that the interview has had both in the TV industry and beyond.
3. Peacock's franchise bets.
In this segment, we look at how two recent moves may signal an evolving strategy in play at the NBCUniversal-backed streamer.
4. Showrunner Spotlight.
Generation co-creators Zelda Barnz and her father, Daniel Barnz, join the podcast this week for an extensive interview about their HBO Max dramedy Generation. Zelda was just 17 when the father-daughter duo sold the script that would become Generation, which counts Lena Dunham as an exec producer. Zelda also opens up about comparisons to Dunham, whom she worked with as an intern during HBO's Industry and what she learned from the Girls creator that she brought to Generation.
5. Critic's Corner.
As usual, every episode ends with Dan's guide to what to watch (or skip) in the week ahead. Since the majority of this week's new launches are embargoed, he revisits Generation, Last Chance U and more.
