'TV's Top 5' Podcast: The Future of 'Game of Thrones,' 'Surviving R. Kelly' Impact
The Hollywood Reporter's recently launched TV podcast, TV's Top 5, returns Thursday with its second episode of 2019.
In every episode, the weekly podcast — hosted by THR's West Coast TV editor, Lesley Goldberg, and chief TV critic, Daniel Fienberg — will feature five topics that are top of mind in the TV industry and go inside the latest headlines, as well as provide a critical guide of what to watch (or skip, as the case may be).
The fifth overall episode of TV's Top 5 leads off by putting a bow on the Golden Globes with a discussion about the winners (The Americans) and lows (pretty much everything else) as well as an overview of what hosts Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg could do should the delightful pair be asked to return (starting at the 24-second mark).
Goldberg and Fienberg also take a look at what is easily the most anticipated pilot of 2019 — the Game of Thrones prequel — and what the cast of eight rising stars says about HBO's larger plan for the franchise (10:32). The duo also unpack the impact that Lifetime's surprise ratings hit Surviving R. Kelly is already having and what its success could mean for the female-focused basic cable network (16:52). The fourth topic is an analysis of why the networks are going all in on dating shows following Fox's revival of Paradise Hotel and USA's Temptation Island (21:15).
The episode wraps with Fienberg's regular "Critic's Corner" segment featuring his recommendations of the week (28:36).
TV's Top 5 joins THR's roster of podcasts, including Awards Chatter, Feinberg's weekly in-depth interview show focusing on the most interesting talents of the Oscar and Emmy seasons; crafts expert Carolyn Giardina's weekly series, Behind the Screen, which explores the top artists and technologies creating film and TV magic; and Seth Abramovitch's monthly series, It Happened in Hollywood, which revisits indelible moments from 90 years of THR's entertainment history. Other podcasts are in the works.
Hear it all now on TV's Top 5 — and be sure to subscribe to the podcast to never miss an episode.
