From the first moment he was introduced in Twin Peaks: The Return, Richard Horne (Eamon Farren) has been shown to be pure evil incarnate, between his abusive actions toward women at the Roadhouse and running over a child only to flee. Still, questions remained about who he was and how he fit into the Horne family.
Sunday's "Part 10" on Showtime provided some hints about the mystery character's background, while going further to illustrate just how depraved and powerful he was. After killing a witness who saw him run over the young boy, Richard called in a favor at the Twin Peaks Sheriff's Department to have the witness' statement removed from the mail. It didn't end there, though.
Richard paid a visit to Sylvia Horne (Jan D'Arcy), revealing that she and Benjamin Horne (Richard Beymer) are his grandparents. Being anything but cordial, he proceeded to assault and rob her, promising to leave town once and for all. Sylvia's disabled son Johnny (Eric Rondell) attempted to intervene but was unable to help.
Which prompts a larger question: Who, exactly, is Richard Horne? There's one major member of the Horne family that has yet to appear, and it's one The Hollywood Reporter has been waiting for. Audrey Horne (Sherilyn Fenn) played a major role on the original Twin Peaks and is part of the cast of Twin Peaks: The Return. Thus far, though, she has yet to appear. One theory posits that she's the mysterious billionaire in New York City, but could she also be Richard's mother?
Revealing that Benjamin and Sylvia are his grandparents certainly seems to point in that direction, but where is this going? After all, while Audrey was a bit mature for her age, she most certainly wasn't an evil being. If she is Richard's mother, what caused this man to become the person he is today?
Perhaps the answer can be found in whomever Richard's father is. Fans have only seen one person this vicious throughout The Return thus far and that's the evil Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) doppelganger, which has been on the loose for the past 25 years. It's no secret to longtime fans of the show that Audrey had a major crush on Cooper in season one of the original series. While the noble agent turned her down because of their age, who is to say the BOB-controlled version of Coop did the same after the conclusion of the show's original run?
The theory that Richard is the child of Audrey and bad Coop is one that some fans have floated as a possibility. However, given the nature of Twin Peaks: The Return, it's hard to theorize practically anything. That said, as David Lynch and Mark Frost continue to reveal more about Richard, his parentage is becoming harder to deny.
Whatever the case, it's going to make any eventual reunion between Audrey and Cooper a tense and memorable affair. Hopefully he'll be out of his Dougie Jones haze by then. Still, while that reunion will be something special, it's hard not to be more excited about seeing bad Coop meet Richard, the equally horrible person that could be his son.
