Now that The Vampire Diaries is set to lose its leading lady, Nina Dobrev, in Thursday's season finale, how the show writes off her character, Elena, has been one of the biggest questions on fans' minds.

But the penultimate episode of the season may have featured a hint.

After Jo (Jodi Lyn O'Keefe) and Alaric's (Matt Davis) wedding was crashed by Jo's vengeful twin, Kai (Christopher Wood), who caused destruction in the church, a newly-human Elena was knocked out.

Promos for the finale indicate things don't go well for Elena in the final episode of season six. And while The Vampire Diaries executive producer Julie Plec acknowledged the promotional spots were "very powerful," whether they are accurate is a whole other matter.

"There's a lot more going on in the episode than if you just take those trailers at face value," she tells The Hollywood Reporter.
