WGN America has released the first official trailer for 1940s drama Manhattan, about the creation of the atomic bomb.

Set in a town whose existence is classified, Frank Winter (John Benjamin Hickey) and his team of scientists are recruited to work on a project they know nothing about. Once inside The Hill, a middle-class bubble in the New Mexico desert, they begin to sense that this is no ordinary assignment.

In the first official trailer featuring footage from the series, Manhattan is a far cry -- at least visually -- from the network's first scripted effort, witch drama Salem. Betrayal, politics, power plays and moral queries dominate the 60 seconds of footage with the biggest question raised at the very end: "Whatever we're doing here, please tell me it's worth it." (Not to mention the play on words with the tagline "Nuclear. Family.")

Olivia Williams, Daniel Stern, Ashley Zukerman, Rachel Brosnahan, Christopher Denham, Katja Herbers, Harry Lloyd, Michael Chernus and Alexia Fast co-star. Manhattan, a 13-episode drama, hails from Sam Shaw (Masters of Sex) and is directed by Thomas Schlamme (The West Wing).

Manhattan premieres July 27 on WGN America.
