Weekend TV Picks: The 2012 Summer Olympics Take Over Primetime

The opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics tops the must-see list for Friday.

The much-anticipated Opening Ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics is expected to be viewed by millions of people all over the world. Film director Danny Boyle (127 Hours, Slumdog Millionaire) is at the helm of the spectacle plans an event filled with animals, Mary Poppins and Paul McCartney. Boyle has said he's trying to create a live film.

But beyond the Summer Games, there are plenty of alternatives across the dial, here's a look:

Friday July 27

NBC: 7:30 p.m. 2012 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony

Get comfortable, the ceremony is scheduled to run approximately four hours.  

IFC: 10 p.m. Comedy Bang Bang -- for comic relief, Scott Aukerman welcomes Elizabeth Banks to the show.

Saturday July 28

NBC: 8 p.m. 2012 Summer Olympics: men's gymnastics, swimming, beach volleyball

BBC America: 10 p.m. The Nerdist -- Chris Hardwick hosts the show where nerd is the native language.

Sunday July 29

CBS: 8 p.m. Big Brother, 9 p.m. 3

ABC: 9 p.m. Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition

NBC: 7 p.m. 2012 Summer Olympics: swimming, women's diving, women's gymnastics

AMC: 10 p.m. Breaking Bad -- Walt and Jesse put together a new business plan.

Bravo: 10 p.m. The Real Housewives of New Jersey

HBO: 9 p.m. True Blood -- Sookie and Jason find the location where their parents died. 10 p.m. The Newsroom -- Sloan (Olivia Munn) subs for Elliott. Will's insomnia leads to his seeing a therapist. 

Showtime: 10 p.m. Weeds -- Nancy needs to earn money and considers returning to her former dealing habits. 10:30 p.m. Episodes -- Matt's stalker connects with Sean on Facebook. Morning reveals to Sean and Beverly that some of the work he had done has gone awry. 

Animal Planet: 8 p.m. Hillbilly Handfishin' season premiere

USA: 10 p.m. Political Animals -- Elaine announces a new plan to her family. Vanessa Redgrave guest stars.
