Weinstein Television Grabs U.S. TV Rights to Kate Bosworth-Sam Riley World War II Miniseries
Weinstein Television is adding a new mini to its slate.
The company on Wednesday announced it has acquired U.S. television rights to the upcoming World War II alternate-history thriller SS-GB starring Kate Bosworth and Sam Riley.
Based on Len Deighton’s 1978 novel by the same name, the miniseries is set in 1940s Nazi-occupied London, at a time when the Battle of Britain is lost, Winston Churchill is dead, King George is held prisoner by the SS, military rule is a constant, pockets of Resistance continue to present a threat and neighbors spy on neighbors. SS-GB centers on Scotland Yard detective Douglas Archer (Riley) as he investigates what appears to be a routine murder case, only to find himself dragged into a much darker world. Archer then uncovers a web of intrigue involving British atomic weapons research secrets, which the Abwehr is keen to get its hands on. The stakes are high as this knowledge could determine the ultimate outcome of the war.
Frequent James Bond franchise scribes Neal Purvis and Robert Wade (Spectre, Skyfall, Quantum of Solace, Casino Royale) penned the TV adaptation, which is helmed by German director Philipp Kadelbach. The writers also will executive produce with Sally Woodward Gentle and Lee Morris of U.K.-based production house Sid Gentle Films. The mini will air on BBC One, but no network is attached yet in the U.S.
This marks the second such partnership for Weinstein Television, which previously co-produced the adaptation of War & Peace that starred Lily James and Paul Dano. That mini aired on A+E Networks stateside this past winter, after first premiering on BBC One.
“SS-GB is a brilliant exploration of 'what if?' What if Germany had won WWII? Len Deighton’s novel in the late '70s was an iconic depiction of the potential dystopia that threatens society when a tyrant wins," TWC co-chairman Harvey Weinstein said in a statement. "It's great to reunite with Simon Vaughan and the BBC and we’re thrilled to be working with Sally Woodward Gentle and Sid Gentle Films. And with Philipp Kadelbach’s incredible visual depiction of this story, there’s room for another series. This is not just a one-off. If Tom Hiddleston hasn’t already locked up the James Bond role, Sam Riley will be giving him a run for his money when people see this."
Added Purvis and Wade: "We enjoyed being part of the team that brought Len Deighton’s SS-GB to television and it is testament to the quality of the show that The Weinstein Co. have partnered up to take this emotional and thrilling miniseries into America."
Weinstein Television's other series include the long-running reality competition Project Runway, MTV's Scream and Netflix's Marco Polo.
Bosworth also stars on the Crackle drama The Art of More, which is heading into season two. Riley's other credits include Maleficent and On the Road.
