'Westworld' Books Vincent Cassel for Key Season 3 Role
Westworld is adding a new big bad for its upcoming third season.
Vincent Cassel has joined the cast of the HBO sci-fi drama from showrunners Jonah Nolan and Lisa Joy. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the Ocean's Twelve and Jason Bourne grad will play a villain in the third season of the series, which is due in 2020. In typical Westworld fashion, HBO declined comment about character details or the fashion of Cassel's commitment to the show.
"We’re incredibly excited to work with Vincent Cassel. We’ve been longtime fans of his and are thrilled for him to join the Westworld team," Nolan and Joy said Tuesday in a joint statement. Westworld will be Cassel's stateside TV series-regular debut.
Cassel is the latest new face to join the third season of the drama, which has also added Lena Waithe and Aaron Paul (the latter will be a series regular). They join a Westworld cast that includes stars Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright and Thandie Newton, who all received big raises for the upcoming season, according to sources.
For their part, Joy and Nolan have promised a "radical shift" for Westworld in season three.
"I'm excited to explore the idea of host as guests, as Bernard and Dolores are guests now," Wright told The Hollywood Reporter shortly after the season finale, speculating about his and Woods' characters' future, as well as the show's own new direction. "The mirror reflection seems that it's turned on this new [incarnation of] Westworld, and that is the human world. I think the exploration now of [pretending to be] human inside this world as hosts could be rich territory. Once again, it seems there's a possibility, again, without having read one word of season three, that the worlds are turned upside down and inside out once more."
Cassel's credits include Black Swan, Eastern Promises and the upcoming Underwater. He is repped by CAA and Agence Adéquat.
