Showtime is adding to its 2021 slate.

The ViacomCBS-backed premium cable network has handed out a series order to drama Yellowjackets, starring Melanie Lynskey and from creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson (Narcos). Jonathan Lisco (Halt and Catch Fire) has also boarded the series and will serve as co-showrunner alongside Lyle and Nickerson.

Set to bow next year, the series is part survival epic, psychological horror story and coming of age drama and follows the members of a high school girls soccer team who survive a plane crash deep in the remote northern wilderness. Told over multiple time periods, Juliette Lewis (Camping), Christina Ricci (Z: The Beginning of Everything) and Tawny Cypress (Unforgettable) co-star in the drama from Entertainment One. Karyn Kusama (Girlfight) directed the pilot. Production on the series, which was picked up to pilot more than a year ago, will begin next year in Vancouver.

"Yellowjackets is a genre-bending, riveting story told across time periods, exploring the journeys of these women at two of the most formative times in their lives,” said Showtime entertainment president Jana Winograde. "We have an unbelievable cast, led by Juliette, Christina, Melanie and Tawny, in a series that’s going to leave you on the edge of your seat with every episode."

Ella Purnell (Sweetbitter), Sammi Hanratty (Shameless), Sophie Thatcher (Prospect), Sophie Nélisse (The Book Thief), Steven Krueger (The Originals) and Jasmin Savoy Brown (The Leftovers) co-star in the drama. Drew Comins also exec produces.

Yellowjackets joins a Showtime 2021 slate that also includes the Dexter update, American Rust and returning originals Back to Life, Billions, Black Monday, The Chi, City on a Hill, The L Word and Work in Progress. The cabler recently picked up The Curse, the Emma Stone-led comedy from the Safdie brothers, and remains at work on its live-action Halo drama, which is now considered a likely bet for 2022.
