Paolo Sorrentino Sets 'The Young Pope' Follow-up 'The New Pope'
HBO is piggybacking on the success of The Young Pope.
The cable network has ordered The New Pope, a new limited series created and directed by Paolo Sorrentino. The show, which is a joint production between HBO and Sky, marks Sorrentino's second limited series with HBO set in the world of the modern papacy.
There's no word yet on whether The Young Pope star Jude Law will be back for the new season. Casting for the title role, as well as additional roles, is expected to begin soon. The series will go into production late next year in Italy.
The New Pope screenplay is written by Sorrentino and Umberto Contarello. Like the first iteration, the series will be produced by Lorenzo Mieli and Mario Gianani for Wildside in co-production with Mediapro. FremantleMedia International, for its part, will handle international distribution.
In October, the producers acknowledged they were developing a second season and that they had plans to take it to partners HBO, Sky and Canal Plus for co-financing as soon as Sorrentino had finished the script.
In The Young Pope, Law stars as the fictional first American pope, an outrageously conservative figurehead who seems hell-bent on turning the world of the Vatican upside down. The cast of the 10-part series also included Diane Keaton, Silvio Orlando and James Cromwell.
