Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 has set a new record as the biggest day-one digital release in publisher Activision’s history, the gaming company announced Sunday.
Digital sales for the new multiplayer shooter, which bowed Friday, broke the previous first-day record for the Call of Duty franchise set by last year’s Call of Duty: WWII. The game, developed by Treyarch Studios, also set a new PlayStation record for day-one digital full game sales on PlayStation Store, globally, as well becoming the best-selling Activision digital game on Xbox One, globally. The PC version of the game also set a series’ high with digital sales that more than doubled year over year, likely helped by the game being the first Call of Duty title released on Blizzard’s battle.net, the company’s online gaming service.
“Black Ops 4 is an incredible game, and the community’s response to it has been amazing. We have shattered multiple digital day one sales records, and the number of people who connected online on day one to play has grown year on year,” said Rob Kostich, executive vp and GM for Call of Duty.
Last year’s Call of Duty: WWII release, which hit shelves in early November, generated over $1 billion by the end of 2017, making it the highest-grossing console title in North America for the year.
In its first day of availability, Black Ops 4 boasted more online players than Call of Duty: WWII.
Black Ops 4 is currently available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox one and PC.
