Charlize Theron has committed to star in Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, an adaptation of the final installment of Park Chan-wook‘s revenge trilogy.
William Monahan has been tapped to pen the script for the project, which also see Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures coming on board to finance
Theron’s Denver & Delilah Films and CJ Entertainment have been slowly developing the English-language remake of since 2008. Theron had, up to this point, been only involved as a producer.
The 2005 South Korean movie centered on a woman who spends 13 years in prison for a crime she did not commit and then sets about exacting the revenge she has plotted during her time behind bars.

“This will be very American and very unexpected,” said Monahan in a statement. “Park is a genius; it¹s the Everest of adaptations and I’ve got blood in my teeth to do it.”
Theron will produce with Denver & Delilah partner Beth Kono, Annapurna’s Ellison and Chelsea Barnard, CJ Entertainment’s Ted Kim, and Monahan. No director is currently attatched.
Justine Suzanne Jones of Henceforth Pictures, AJ Dix of Denver & Delilah, Ted Schipper of Annapurna and Miky Lee of CJ Entertainment will executive produce.
Panorama Media will serve as the international sales agent. Monahan, who won an Oscar for his script adapting the Asian crime movie Infernal Affairs into The Departed, worked on Sin City: A Dame to Kill For and Universal¹s Tom Cruise sci-fi pic Oblivion. He is repped by WME and Myman Greenspan.
Theron, repped by WME, One Talent Management and Hansen Jacobson, last starred in Prometheus.
