Did Chris Evans spoil the fate of Steve Rogers on Twitter? The actor would like everyone to know that he’s really not going to answer that question one way or another, but he certainly didn’t mean to let anything slip even if he did.
“I should clarify that, I know I did tweet something that made a lot of people think that it was in some way a spoiler, and I should clarify that, regardless of how Avengers 4 ends, I would’ve tweeted the exact same thing,” Evans told the crowd at Chicago’s ACE Comic Con this weekend in response to a question about next year’s as-yet-untitled fourth Avengers movie.
Evans’ tweet, posted Oct. 4, reads, “Officially wrapped on Avengers 4. It was an emotional day to say the least. Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honor. To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera, and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful.” Many took the message to mean that he was officially announcing an end to his tenure as the Star-Spangled Avenger — and speculated it meant his character died in the film. Evans had previously indicated he planned to retire as Captain America, which he has played since 2011’s First Avengers, following Avengers 4.
“That last day of filming really was a very emotional day,” he explained at ACE Comic Con. “It was the culmination of almost 10 years of filming and 22 movies — this unbelievable tapestry — and you feel a lot more emotions than I think even I thought I’d feel, and I felt it was appropriate to share the gratitude. I know it had a ripple effect, but I am neither confirming nor denying anything.”
Avengers 4 opens May 3, 2019, finally revealing what happens to Captain America once and for all.
