Next August marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of legendary comic book artist, and DC Entertainment announced Monday it will mark the occasion by presenting 12 new stories taking place on Earth A.D., the post-apocalyptic world where the boy hero Kamandi lives. Kamandi was first introduced in 1972’s Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth series, which saw him inhabiting a world ruled by intelligent animals and in which humans have been reduced back to primitive ways after an apocalyptic event.
DC is dubbing their celebration the Kamandi Challenge, which will see 12 creative teams (one writer and artist) given a randomly selected section of Earth A.D. in which to set stories.

Kirby, who died in 1994, fleshed out some sections of Earth A.D. more than others, so some of the creators will get the extra challenge of exploring areas the iconic creator didn’t spend much time in.
Part of the fun is that the teams are working independently and don’t know what the others are working on. Things will eventually come full circle, as the first and last team’s stories will both take place in the same section of Earth A.D.
They’ll be more about Kirby this week at New York Comic Con, where DC publishers DiDio and Jim Lee will speak about his legacy and about the upcoming project.
