Nick Derington/DC EntertainmentRebirth won’t be the only comic book relaunch for DC Entertainment’s superhero line this year, with the publisher announcing details of a brand new line, titled Young Animal, that will offer an alternative take on the genre at this year’s Emerald City Comic Con.
Spearheaded by musician and comic book writer Gerard Way, Young Animal will feature four series mixing revivals of pre-existing concepts and original characters in an attempt at diversifying the offerings of DC’s output.
“I am thrilled to help bring DC’s Young Animal to life, having been raised on experimental ‘80s and ‘90s takes on superheroes. I see Young Animal as a place to try new ideas — following the spirit of those books from the past but bring them somewhere else,” said Way in a statement released by DC following the ECCC announcement. “I see it as an imprint where we can explore fine art, bold concepts, mature themes, and strangeness — with lots of heart.”
The four titles in the line are: Doom Patrol by Way and Nick Derington, reviving the 1960s series of the self-styled “World’s Strangest Heroes”; Shade, The Changing Girl, a gender-swapped update of the 1970s Steve Ditko creation by YA novelist Cecil Castellucci and Marley Zarcone; Cave Carson Has A Cybernetic Eye, which reboots the star of the 1960s series Cave Carson Adventures Inside Earth, by Way, Jon Rivera and Powers co-creator Michael Avon Oeming; and Mother Panic, a celebrity heiress by day, vigilante by night, by Way, Jody Houser and Tommy Lee Edwards.
The new line launches in September with Doom Patrol, with Shade and Carson following in October, and Mother Panic in November.
