Ryan Sook/DC EntertainmentIt may have been less than three years since DC Entertainment rebooted its superhero universe from scratch as The New 52, but next year the publisher plans to explore both the history and future of the universe with a new weekly series called The New 52: Futures End.
The new series will launch at the beginning of May, with a special “zero issue” released as part of the annual Free Comic Book Day celebration and the first regular issue following later that month. According to Jeff Lemire, one of four writers on the series, Futures End will investigate “the nature of what a hero is … by playing with the future of the New 52 timeline.”

In fact, the series will take place in multiple time periods, centering on Frankenstein — in DC continuity, the famous monster has taken his creator’s name and dedicated himself to hunting other monsters — in the past, Justice League member Firestorm in the present, and animated fan-favorite Batman Beyond in the future.
Lemire — who’ll co-write the series with Brian Azzarello, Keith Giffen and Dan Jurgens — told the Associated Press that the series will go far beyond those three, however. “That’s definitely one of our mandates,” he said, “to create new characters and new concepts that will hopefully have a life beyond the series.”
The new series will be DC’s second weekly title to run through 2014, joining the previously announced Batman: Eternal.
