Toby Haynes, the television director known for the celebrated space-themed Black Mirror episode “USS Callister,” is heading to a different sci-fi galaxy.
Haynes will direct on Disney+’s Rogue One spinoff, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. He steps in to direct after showrunner and Rogue One screenwriter Tony Gilroy opted out of directing duties due to concerns about traveling from New York to the U.K., where the series will shoot, amid the COVID-19 pandemic. He opted to pass the baton to the U.K.-based Haynes, and remains showrunner on the series, which stars Diego Luna as Cassian Andor. The cast also includes Alan Tudyk, Stellan Skarsgard, Kyle Soller, Adria Arjona and Denise Gough.
In addition to Black Mirror, Haynes is known for directing episodes of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, Sherlock, Doctor Who and the new Amazon series Utopia.
The untitled Cassian Andor series is one of several live-action TV projects Lucasfilm has for Disney+, including Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian, which launches season two Oct. 30, as well as an Obi-Wan Kenobi series starring Ewan McGregor.
Haynes is repped by WME and Curtis Brown Group.
