Following on the heels of Marvel’s announcement of its all-female team of Avengers, A-Force, Dynamite Entertainment has upped the ante with the announcement of an all-women comic book crossover event written by an all-female team headed by Gail Simone.
Swords of Sorrow will launch with a core series written by Simone, alongside spinoff titles including a Vampirella miniseries by horror novelist Nancy A. Collins and a Green Hornet co-written by Ms. Marvel and A-Force’s G. Willow Wilson.
“I love pulp adventure, always have,” Simone said in a statement about the summer event. “But as male-dominated as comics have often been, the pulp adventure world seems to be even more so. Most of the big-name stars and creators are dudes, and that’s fine, it’s great. But it hit me … what if that wasn’t the case? What if adventure pulps had also been written with female readers in mind, and awesome female characters in the spotlight?”
In addition to writing the central series for the event, Simone also selected the writers for the spinoff titles, saying that she “got the best writers around, gave them a fun combination of characters and just let them go wild.”
Dynamite CEO and publisher Nick Barrucci added that Simone’s involvment took Swords of Sorrow “to the next level. She proposed to make the event even bigger by creating a tapestry of interwoven stories, a work of art to which many of today’s most revered female talents could contribute.”
Swords of Sorrow launches in May, with related titles to follow.
