Universal is back in business with director Baltasar Kormákur, the director of its action hits 2 Guns and Contraband.
The studio has picked up Vikingr, a Viking action drama that has the Icelandic filmmaker’s imprimatur. Kormákur wrote the story and co-wrote the screenplay with Ólafur Egill Egilsson.
Kormákur will also produce via his RVK Studios banner, along with Marc Platt Productions’ Marc Platt and Adam Siegel, Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, and Nathalie Marciano.
The project is close to Kormakur’s heart as it tells of the early days of Viking life. According to the studio, Vikingr is “based on the classic tales deriving from the legendary Icelandic Sagas, which document larger-than-life heroes, adventures and battles of early Nordic settlers, as well as daily life in the Viking age. Vikingr offers a fresh look at Viking culture that is both intimate and epic.”
The filmmaker is currently in postproduction on Everest , which is also from Universal and Working Title. (Cross Creek Pictures is also behind the mountaineering drama.)
