Spectre‘s “Writing’s on the Wall,” co-written by Sam Smith, was named best original song at the 88th annual Academy Awards on Sunday night.
Smith, who penned the music and lyrics with Jimmy Napes, accepted the award, saying, “I actually can’t breathe right now” before publicly telling fellow nominee Lady Gaga onstage, “You’re incredible.”
“I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community around the world,” he said, adding, “We can all stand together as winners.”
The song beat out “Earned It” from Fifty Shades of Grey (music and lyrics by Abel Tesfaye, Ahmad Balshe, Jason Daheala Quenneville and Stephan Moccio), “Manta Ray” from Racing Extinction (music by J. Ralph and lyrics by Antony Hegarty), “Simple Song #3” from Youth (music and lyrics by David Lang) and “Til It Happens To You” from The Hunting Ground (music and lyrics by Diane Warren and Lady Gaga).
The Chris Rock-hosted awards were held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
