“Dudes are funnier than chicks,” Adam Carolla notoriously claimed in 2012. So why do the six female comedy giants who appeared at Friday’s Women in Focus conference at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts have $3 billion-plus in grosses? Here are six thoughtful comments made by the Chapman panelists, moderated by Dodge professor and former Warner Bros. Pictures marketing head Dawn Taubin:
Maya Rudolph on the value of improv work: “Improv gives me the confidence in work and in life. I feel I can talk my way out of anything, even with my children.”
Diablo Cody: “Creating characters is like deep psychotherapy. When I think of Mavis in Young Adult, I think, ‘Omigod, is that me?’”
Nancy Meyers on seeing the marquee for Private Benjamin with Goldie Hawn: “Goldie had tears in her eyes when she said, ‘There’s no guy’s name up there.’”
Donna Langley on the skepticism that met her proposal to make Mamma Mia: “Even if people tell you you’re nuts, if you’re passionate about something, just go for it.”
Anne Fletcher on women trying to balance career and personal life: “It is possible to do it all — just a little tricky.”
Penelope Spheeris: “I only recently realized most of the problems I had were because I was a woman. I never thought about it.”
