Adam Sandler and his Happy Madison production banner will team with STX Entertainment for an animated feature.
Sandler will write, produce and star in the untitled project, which is a part of STX’s push for family-friendly content to add to the 12 to 15 films the studio hopes to release each year.
The company is currently developing another animated film based on the Uglydoll toy.
STX execs have a long history in animation. Adam Fogelson, chairman of the STX Entertainment Motion Picture Group, worked closely with Chris Meledandri’s Illumination Entertainment on such films as Despicable Me and Minions. President and chief creative officer Oren Aviv previously led both production and marketing at Walt Disney Studios and oversaw marketing for campaigns on such titles as Finding Nemo and The Incredibles.
Sandler is no stranger to family-friendly animated fare. The actor’s Hotel Transylvania and Hotel Transylvania 2 grossed $825 million at the global box office.
“As we continue to grow our company, the family arena is of critical importance to STX Entertainment and we are tremendously excited to have Adam Sandler and Happy Madison developing projects with us for the global animation market,” Fogelson said in a statement.
Sandler will soon release the comedy The Do-Over on Netflix as a part of his overall deal with the streaming service.
