The makers of Iron Sky: The Coming Race have launched a new crowdfunding campaign to finance the sequel to the 2012 cult favorite about Nazis on the moon.
The target for the first round of crowdfunding, launched on Indiegogo and lasting 45 days, is $500,000. Over the next 18 months, the Iron Sky team is looking to raise a total of $10 million from online backers for the sequel. The remainder of the $15 million budget for Iron Sky: The Coming Race will be put together from soft money sources in Germany and the Nordic territories.
In addition to crowdfunding for the sequel, Iron Sky producers earlier this year sold shares online to Iron Sky Universe, the company that owns the Iron Sky brand. The crowd investment raised around $200,000 in 24 hours, cash that will go towards developing several properties, including a TV series and video games based on the Iron Sky franchise.
Speaking to THR at the American Film Market, Iron Sky director Timo Vuorensola and producer Tero Kaukomaa said by funding the sequel in this way, they hope to avoid some of the problems in the release of the first Iron Sky film.
While the $10 million feature sold well, the staggered release of the movie, which debuted in Finland in March 2012 and first hit U.S. screens in July, meant it was widely pirated. Kaukomaa estimates that while some 10 million people worldwide have seen the original movie, only a fraction of them paid for it. The global gross for Iron Sky was around $8 million.
“For the sequel we want to control it entirely so we can do a global day-and-date release, to allow all the fans worldwide to be able to see, and pay for, the movie at the same time,” Vuorensola said.
To excite that fan base, as well as potential distributors at AFM, the film’s producers will screen a 4-minute promo of Iron Sky: The Coming Race at a launch party in Santa Monica Thursday night. The promo, which was screened for THR, features a money shot of Adolf Hitler riding a T-Rex, an image Vuorensola had promised the fans he would deliver.
