Beta CinemaThe golden promise of an Oscar — or even a coveted nomination — seems to have enticed AFM buyers, which have snatched up Foreign Language contenders on offer from German sales outfit Beta Cinema.
Beta is reporting multiple deals for its would-be Oscar titles: Germany’s entry Two Lives, the Romanian contender Child’s Pose and Hungary’s The Notebook (Le Grand Cahier).
Two Lives, a Norway-Germany co-production from director Georg Maas starring Liv Ullmann and Juliane Koehler, was picked up by CDI Films for Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, Strada Films for Greece and Swallow Wings for Taiwan. Sundance Selects recently nabbed U.S. rights for the historic/political drama.

Janos Szasz‘s Le Grand Cahier, an adaptation of the anti-war novel by Agota Kristof, confirmed sales with Njuta Films for Sweden/Denmark, Films4You for Portugal, Catchplay for Taiwan and Sponge for South Korea.
For Calin Peter Netzer‘s mother-son drama Child’s Pose, which won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival this year, Beta has sold out worldwide, with a final deal with Alfa Films for Argentina. Zeitgeist Films has U.S. rights.
Separately, Beta also has closed multiple deals for Uberto Pasolini‘s Venice Film Fest entry Still Life, starring Eddie Marsan, selling France (Version Originale/Condor), Sweden (Folkets Bio), Norway (Arthaus), Greece (Feelgood Entertainment), Switzerland (Filmcoopi) and Korea (Dreamwest Pictures). Bernhard Rose‘s The Devil’s Violinist, featuring real-life virtuoso David Garrett, sold for Italy (Academy Two) and Mexico (Gussi), while children’s film Famous Five III went to Metropolitan for France.
