The Starz drama Magic City, which was cancelled last year after two seasons, will be adapted into a film with Bill Murray and Bruce Willis starring.
Mitch Glazer, who created the series, will write and direct. The show’s original castmembers — Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Olga Kurylenko, Danny Huston and Kelly Lynch — are also returning for the film.
Len Blavatnik of AI Film, Brett Ratner of RatPac and Gerry Schwartz of Onex Corporation will produce and finance with Steve Bing of Shangri-La Entertainment, Alan J. Helene and Glazer producing. QED will introduce the project to buyers at AFM next week.
Magic City centers on gangsters, hoteliers and politicians in Miami in 1962. Morgan plays Ike Evans, the owner of a glitzy hotel. Kurylenko plays his wife, a former nightclub dancer. Huston plays mob boss Ben “The Butcher” Diamond, with whom Ike makes a suspicious bargain, and Lynch portrays Ike’s wealthy former sister-in-law.
The film will reunite Glazer with Murray and Willis, with whom he worked on the upcoming Rock the Kasbah, which was also produced and financed by QED. Glazer previously worked with Murray on the Christmas film Scrooged.
CAA will represent the film’s domestic distribution rights.
QED recently produced and financed Fury, the David Ayer tank drama released by Sony, which has garnered positive reviews and earned $50.2 million at the domestic box office. The company’s slate at AFM includes Rock the Kasbah, the Zac Efron–Robert De Niro comedy Dirty Grandpa and The Family Fang, a Jason Bateman-directed drama starring Bateman and Nicole Kidman.
