Oscar-nominated director Agnieszka Holland (In Darkness, Europa Europa) is turning to crime for her latest feature, Game Count, directing and co-writing a movie based on a novel by Olga Tokarczuk, with the Polish author’s cooperation.
The novel, published in English as Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead, is a mixture of mystery, thriller and dark comedy. It recounts a series of grisly killings in rural Poland for which an eccentric old woman becomes the focus of the police investigation.
Game Count is being set up as a Polish-German-Czech-Swedish co-production. European subsidy body Euroimages has put up $510,000 (€450,000) in production funding.

Game Count will be Holland’s first feature since 2011’s In Darkness, which was nominated for an Academy Award for best foreign-language film. The 66-year-old filmmaker is in demand as a TV helmer, with recent small-screen credits including episodes from season 3 of Netflix’s House of Cards and last year’s Rosemary’s Baby miniseries for NBC.
