Amber Heard’s ex-girlfriend says the actress was wrongfully accused of domestic violence in 2009.
In a statement released Wednesday by Heard’s spokeswoman, Tasya van Ree says a past incident involving the former couple has been misinterpreted.
“In 2009, Amber was wrongfully accused for an incident that was misinterpreted and over-sensationalized by two individuals in a power position,” said van Ree, Heard’s girlfriend at the time of the incident, in the statement. “I recount hints of misogynistic attitudes toward us which later appeared to be homophobic when they found out we were domestic partners and not just ‘friends.’ Charges were quickly dropped and she was released moments later.”
She continued: “It’s disheartening that Amber’s integrity and story are being questioned yet again. Amber is a brilliant, honest and beautiful woman and I have the utmost respect for her. We shared 5 wonderful years together and remain close to this day.”
News of the incident was first reported on Tuesday.
A spokesman for the Port of Seattle says Heard was arrested by police for domestic violence at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport in 2009, and the prosecuting attorney’s office declined to file criminal charges in the case.
Heard and van Ree split in 2012.
Heard is currently divorcing actor Johnny Depp and was granted a temporary restraining order against the Alice Through the Looking Glass star on May 27. In her request for the restraining order, Heard said Depp threw her cellphone at her during a fight causing injury to her cheek and eye, the court filing stated. Depp’s legal team has since accused Heard of making false claims for monetary gain.
The actors were married for 15 months before Heard filed the divorce petition last month.
