AMC Theaters, management-production film the Collective and horror website BloodyDisgusting.com are giving indie scary movies a chance to be seen.
The three are partnering up to acquire and market horror and thriller titles from the festival and international markets.
The Collective has already picked up the rights to several films with AMC making a commitment to show a movie at least twice a week, in 32 domestic markets, including a Friday midnight show. The first movie is scheduled to hit screens in May.
Following the theatrical release, the movie will hit DVD, VOD, online and TV. In their search, the Collective has been scouring the Toronto International Film Festival, the Berlin International Film Festival, Slamdance, Sitges Film Festival and Fantastic Fest, with Bloody Disgusting help choosing the titles and also helping with promotion.
The first films to be released include:
Cold Fish: Directed by Sion Sono, the story centers a man whose daughter is caught stealing. To make amends, the daughter begins to work in a middle-aged couple’s fish store and soon the father discovers the truth about their business.
Rammbock: A movie that played at Fantastic Fest is Germany’s first foray into the zombie genre.
Yellowbrickroad: Written and directed by Andy Mitton and Jesse Holland, the movie purports to tell the story of the missing inhabitants of a town called Friar, NH, who in 1940 left their homes and walked up an ancient trail, never to be seen again.
“We see a lot of horror films that never make it to the consumer here in the States,” said Bloody Disgusting co-head Brad Miska. “We hope to change that by releasing only films we personally love and think the horror community will embrace.”
