On Monday night, Phillipa Soo celebrated the Broadway opening of Amelie, the third musical in which she has originated a lead role.
It’s a rare feat completed at just 26 years old. This time last year, she was part of the original cast of Hamilton, for which she earned a Tony nomination as the founding father’s dedicated wife Eliza. Prior to that, the actress starred off-Broadway as the wide-eyed, titular female of Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812, which also opened on Broadway earlier this season.
But as the shy Parisian heroine of Amelie — the musical adaptation of the beloved 2001 French film — Soo is singing a much more whimsical tune than those of her previous characters.
“I like that Amelie is strange, just like me,” Soo told The Hollywood Reporter at the opening-night party, held at Rockefeller Center. “I’m happy I’ve gotten to be on this journey following my Hamilton journey because they’re so different.”
Directed by Pam MacKinnon and also starring Adam Chanler-Berat, the new musical at the Walter Kerr Theatre follows Amelie through the magical Montmartre of her imagination, chronicling her dilemma as she discovers that it’s easier to bring joy to others than break free from her own isolation.
“I hope they’re reminded that joy is very easy to access if you just put down your phone, look at another person and make a human connection,” said Soo. “You’ll find a new experience that you wouldn’t have had otherwise.”
