Funny lady Amy Schumer has always poked fun at the expectations women have to face with society’s beauty standards. But in an interview with Maria Shriver on the Today show on Friday morning, the comedian gets serious about her own issues with body image.
“It’s an emotional thing. It’s been a struggle for me my whole life, and especially just being in the entertainment industry. Standing on a stage in front of people, I can’t perform my best or be confident if I’m not sure — if I’m pulling at something,” Schumer, who recently hosted SNL, told Shriver. “And sometimes, I would just want to throw in the towel and be like, ‘I’m not gonna go do stand-up tonight.’ ”

But stylist Leesa Evans, who styled Schumer for the Emmys and worked with her on Trainwreck, helped her appreciate her hourglass figure.
“My sister and I, we both have always dressed badly. Leesa had given me this gift of showing me how to dress and feel good. And she didn’t have to do this, but she just did — she shopped for my sister also,” said a teary-eyed Schumer. “And seeing my little sister wearing a little blazer and a shirt and looking just like a strong, beautiful woman, I realized that holding myself back was also holding her back. And so to see just the person I care the most about being given those tools was just really moving for me, and I just wanted to give it to every woman.” And she’s doing so by partnering with Goodwill to empower women to dress confidently in the workforce.

Before Amy Schumer: Live at the Apollo premieres Oct. 17, the smokey-eye fan shared that the HBO special will touch upon the experiences she’s had in Hollywood — including self-esteem.
Said Schumer: “I feel like I went underground with this story on Hollywood, and I’m coming out, ‘OK here’s what’s going on: No one’s just naturally thin. Everyone’s starving.’ “
