TORONTO – Anchor Bay Entertainment Canada has picked up the Canadian distribution rights to writers/directors Jen and Sylvia Soska’s American Mary, the thriller/horror pic from Vancouver producer IndustryWorks Pictures.
The Canadian deal follows Universal Pictures International picking the Canuck indie up for distribution in the U.K., Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
American Mary, which was first shopped earlier this year at Cannes, recently earned lead Katherine Isabelle (Ginger Snaps) a special mention in the best horror feature actress category at the FantasticFest in Austin, Texas.
The Canadian indie portrays a disenchanted medical student who enters a world of underground surgery that leaves more scars on herself than on her freak clientele.
News of the Anchor Bay distribution deal followed the Canadian premiere of American Mary Thursday night at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival.
The film is the follow-up to the Soska twin’s debut feature, Dead Hooker in a Trunk.
An American distribution deal is also in the works for American Mary after its current run on the international genre festival circuit, which includes a premiere at FrightFest UK, and a screening at ScreamFest in Los Angeles.
Evan Taylor and John Curtis share producers credits on American Mary.
