Matilda’s ‘orrible parents have been found, with Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough joining the cast as Mr. & Mrs. Wormwood in the Netflix/Tristar musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic children’s story.
Indian comedian Sindhu Vee has also been cast to play Mrs. Phelps the librarian. They join Emma Thompson (playing the cruel headmistress Miss Trunchbull), Lashana Lynch (the kindly Miss Honey) and newcomer Alisha Weir as Matilda Wormwood in Brit director Matthew Warchus’ film.
Dahl’s book is centered on Matilda, a precocious and gifted girl who uses her powers to overcome bullies, including her family and Miss Trunchbull. It was adapted into a movie in 1996 in which Mara Wilson played the title character, with Pam Ferris as the memorably villainous Miss Trunchbull. The movie, while not a hit when made, is now considered a classic.
This adaptation is primarily based on the Tony and Olivier award-winning musical by the Royal Shakespeare Company that played on Broadway and in the West End and was directed by Warchus. Dennis Kelly adapted the musical which featured original music and lyrics by Aussie comedian Tim Minchin.
The film is being produced by Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner of Working Title, Jon Finn, and Luke Kelly of The Roald Dahl Story Company. Netflix will distribute worldwide except in the U.K., where TriStar Pictures will distribute theatrically.
