Wesley MannTaiwan’s most famous film director, two-time Oscar winner Ang Lee, will lead the jury at the 50th Taiwan Golden Horse Awards, an event often described as the Chinese Oscars, although awards are decided by jury.
Lee, who won two best directing Oscars for Brokeback Mountain and Life of Pi, said “he will do his best to moderate the jury members’ opinions in the most prestigious film competition in all the Chinese-speaking countries,” organizers said in a statement.
The Golden Horse Awards, which take place in November, are the biggest Chinese-language awards event.
Last year, Johnnie To‘s suspense-thriller Life Without Principle swept the awards, winning best director, best actor and best original screenplay. To will participate as a juror in the Golden Horse Film Project Promotion, which takes place between Nov. 19-21.
Tsai Ming-Liang’s first feature in four years, Stray Dogs, currently in competition in Venice, will open the festival, which runs from Nov. 8-28.
Legendary director Hou Hsiao-Hsien, the chairman of the festival, will lead the Golden Horse Film Academy in person.
The Golden Horse Awards Ceremony will take place on Nov. 23.
